Employment Gap Explained

I left Sussex County Community College in 2009 following a medical incident. Fortunately today there are no ongoing issues to be concerned about. It simply took time to correctly diagnose and properly address the issue. It's amazing what stress can do to the human body.

While taking some time to recuperate, I began working again. This was part-time at Dental Assistant Services, a business my mother started nearly 40 years ago. Not having a background in dentistry, I focused my efforts on overall business strategies. I built the original website from scratch, assisted with clerical work around the office, proctored exams, authored a series of continuing education courses, and assisted with marketing.

Unfortunately just as I was improving my stepfather was diagnosed with what became a terminal case of brain cancer. As his health and independence declined, I stepped in to become his caregiver. Since I wasn't working full-time, it made sense for me to assume the role. It became a 24/7 responsibility which made it nearly impossible to return to work.

As a result, while he slept or when someone else filled in, I began volunteering with and assisting in the establishment of Encouragemint, Inc. I spent months conducting research and preparing an application for the Internal Revenue Service that eventually granted the newly formed company tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status. I was also meeting with attorneys about liability protection, applying for grants, and putting together a team.

Additionally, I used the time to educate myself on various aspects of real estate investing. I started to attend networking and educational groups, but quickly discovered that there were few options locally as all of the groups within driving distance were in or just outside of New York City or Philadelphia (1.5 hours away). It was then that I took it upon myself to start a new real estate investing educational and networking group that I called Central Jersey Real Estate Investors

It was only after my stepfather passed that I began to actively look for employment outside the home again.
